In Sweden Höganäs AB, a metal powder and powder products manufacturer and biomass gasification technology developer Cortus Energy AB have signed a long-term agreement to establish a “continuous supply of renewable energy gas and other energy products” to Höganäs on a commercial scale.

Cortus Energy has produced the first ultra-clean syngas at the new plant in Höganäs. The product is identical to what was previously produced at Cortus pilot plant, an ultra-clean syngas that fully meets the supply agreement with Höganäs AB. The results from the test were good and of value for both Cortus and Höganäs AB in continued tests for demonstration. Before implementing the test two important steps were required: inerting and odorization of the piping system to Höganäs AB. Inerting is done in order to achieve a safe, inflammable and non-reactive atmosphere. This project is a joint research and development project between the Swedish steel industry, Höganäs AB, Cortus Energy AB, various universities and the Swedish authorities Swedish Energy Agency and Swedish Environmental Protection Agency. Cortus Energy has produced the first syngas at the plant in Höganäs. The product is identical to what was previously produced in the pilot plant in Köping, an ultra-pure syngas from biomass that f ully meets the supply agreement with Höganäs AB. The ultimate plan is for this technique to be made available for use by the entire iron and steel industry. After several lab studies demonstrating the possibilities of the Woodroll process – the gasification and restructuring of biomass to synthesis gas – Cortus Energy built at pilot plant at our site in Höganäs, Sweden, to perform tests on an industrial scale.

Höganäs will lower their climate impact by using Cortus technology to replace natural gas. The plant, as built today, will reduce Höganäs’ carbon footprint by 10-15,000 tons CO2 equivalents per year.
