ABSTRACT. Statins are widely prescribed medications to prevent cardiovascular events. While self-limited statin myopathy is relatively common, statin-induced necrotizing autoimmune myopathy (SINAM) is extremely uncommon, with incidence of two cases per million per year.

However, prescribers need to be aware of a less common complication, statin-associated necrotizing myopathy, which can occur at any time during the treatment course and has been found to be <0.1% of adverse effects. Statin-associated myopathy comprises of a spectrum of conditions ranging from benign myalgias to statin-induced immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy.
